about

Eric and I were working at the same meaningless establishment outside of Boston and we eventually realized he was a drummer and I was a bass player. At the time it had been about a year since I was with The Jimmies out in Arizona and I had the hankering to play. Eric was burned out from playing with a local singer / songwriter who just got a recording deal and then dumped her band. I said I'd make him a deal that it would be easy and painless, not a lot of equipment or too late and he didn't need to go anywhere, we'd do it in his apartment. Eventually he agreed to give it a shot, and he knew a guitarist we could try. I traipsed over to Jamaica Plain to Eric's living room, the guitarist was already there, plugged in got everything rolling. Eric and I clicked immediately but the guitar guy was a gun slinger and poured through every riff and scale he knew, didn't listen to anything, played over everything and didn't stop. I tried to wrestle with this guy but it didn't work, the session ended and Eric said fuck it. Then I suggested to Eric to give it another shot, this time I'd bring the guitarist - John, who was living up the street in Somerville. Eric agreed, but then I had to make a deal with John because he was not enthused about leaving the lair or attempting to play a guitar live, which he hadn't done in literal eons. I said I'd make it as easy as possible, minimal equipment, easy set up, I'll drive. Seems like it was snowy winter in Boston, second floor apartment in one of those big old houses. Eric had a nice little kit, John had some kind of gizmo with an amp, I had a quack pedal for the bass and a phaser pedal for the voice. Did a quick mic job, got the 4-track rolling and hit it. I was working out of The Jimmies playbook, so I was on top of it, about 35 min of songs in 60 min, said thank-you very much, packed up and that was it.
