about

In 1985 Punk was finished, MTV was peaking and running out of ideas. Ron Reagan and John Rambo were the reigning Hollywood inspired macho leaders of the American zeitgeist, who, combined with Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority and Nancy Reagan’s War On Drugs rounded out the party of Greed Or Prudery to the delight of the self-righteous, conservative rich and paranoid poor. AIDS appeared out of nowhere and was raging with no hope, help or understanding. The Soviet Union was running on fumes and would be gone before long. But in South Africa, Apartied was still the norm with Nelson Mandela still in jail and flurries of resistance sometimes pocked with traitors being burned alive and given the name “Kentuckies” because they would resemble something off the menu at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

It was a strange and cynical time within which Fidel & The Infidels created a blend of intense simplistic music strategies attached to harsh sarcastic observations concerning the issues of the day. This was before the idea of “political correctness” was invented and such music would not be viewed as appropriate today, but with a Punk inspired backbone and fringe dweller middle finger attitude Fidel & The Infidels had something that needed to be said.

Needless to say, there were few gigs for Fidel & The Infidels, but there were many recorded sessions on a rudimentary 2 track reel to reel tape recorded using scrounged equipment, barely functioning amplification and the crappiest microphones imaginable. Almost 40 years later, songs from these tapes have been transferred and polished (as much as possible) with today’s digital magic to make Check The Kiln.

This is aggressive, raw and spontaneous music recorded live with no apologies.
